How to choose picture frames to complement your home's decorating style

Some general things to remember when choosing the picture frames that will complement your home's decorating style...

Frames are great to enhance the beauty of your pictures, posters and canvases and adorn your walls. But, before considering any frame, stick with your overall room style as a start.

Remember that frames loosely fall into three categories:

  • Traditional (often wood frames with some embellishment such as ornate carving, gilt, etc.)
  • Modern (metal or ultraplain wood)
  • Transitional (minimal ornamentation)

These frames can work in nearly every decor, suit most subjects and can usually move from room to room easily. Use old-style, ornate gold frames in traditional, often formal environments.

At last, don't forget to take into consideration :

  • The period in which the artwork was created: for example, don't match an antique-style frame to a modern piece of art and vice-versa. These old-style, ornate gold frames generally work best with nonabstract artwork.
  • The general harmony and predominant colours of the picture. Be careful not to let a frame overwhelm a picture; this most often happens when a wide, colourful frame is placed around a small or delicately executed work of art.
